Rachel Row – Follow the Step (KiNK Beat Mix)

wearedefected

Seminal house label Defected have been undergoing a bit of a change over the last 18 months. As label boss Simon Dunmore noted “once a label has been around for a period of time, the shine goes off it. They’re not new anymore and maybe not so cool”. So time for a freshen up..

“It started with signing a few choice records, from people like Inner City, MK and Storm Queen. I think that opened a few people’s ears and eyes to what we do.”

To reflect these changes they commissioned Trevor Jackson to re-design the brand image. As you might expect, Trevor’s delivered a fresh modern look for the brand.

The ethos of the new brand identity is strongly related to community, epitomised by the ‘We Are Defected’ line. Release and events artwork will include especially commissioned photographs of Defected fans, as well as DJs and artists.

There’s also lots of new launches, from a sub label “DFTD”, to the new nights in Ibiza.

The sub label will house up & coming acts that are not quite ready for the main label just yet. And after 8 very successful years at Pacha in Ibiza they’ve moved up the road to Ushuaia & new club Bomba.

There’s weekly residencies at Bomba and Ushuaia Tower. With “Defected In the House” at Bomba every Saturday, featuring a great line up that includes Yousef, Dennis Ferrer, MK, Duke Dumont, & Disclosure. Whilst the Ushuaia Towers nights will focus on DFTD talent every Monday & will be free entry.

So, have they succeeded? Great new brand identity, exciting residencies in Ibiza, & cool new releases. Job done!

Which brings us nicely back round to the Rachel Row release on DFTD. Originally, on Catz N Dogz’s Pets Recordings, and now picked up for a release on the DFTD imprint. The ‘KiNK Beat Mix’ is a wonderfully skilful and up tempo reworking, that has been working on dance floors for months, and will doubtless be on repeat on the White Isle over the Summer.

Follow the Step is out now.
